So, someone in the group came up with the idea that you should do a capital campaign? Let me guess, with quizzical looks they said, good idea? Um, what’s a capital campaign?
“A capital campaign is a structured, time-limited, and intensive fundraising effort by a nonprofit to secure small, medium, and large gifts for a specific major project, such as building construction, renovations, land acquisition, or expansion of some nature. These campaigns usually span 2-3 years and typically involve a private "quiet" phase to secure major gifts before going public.
All non-profits need funding, that’s why we call it a non-profit. Its intention is not to be a money-making machine or a “for profit” entity, or for the selling of a particular product. Its purpose is to provide a service that serves people in some form or fashion.
The federal non-profit tax-exempt status in the U.S. was formally established via the Revenue Act of 1894, with modernized, lasting legislation enacted in 1909, and solidified in 1913 following the 16th Amendment. These laws granted exemptions to organizations operating exclusively for religious, charitable, or educational purposes.
Since that time thousands upon thousands of non-profit organizations have been created. Total charitable giving in the USA in 2023 exceeded $557 billion dollars, and those non-profits generated over $1.4 trillion dollars in economic activity. Suffice to say, its big business, but it’s not exactly supposed to be big business!
The non-profit sector generally uses capital campaigns for major projects. Whether that is a new building, renovations, expansion, or to fund a special project within the goals and purposes of the non-profit, like “Habitat for Humanity,” for example. These campaigns are more for a specified vision and usually carries a defined timeline. They are rarely intended for operations, and/or debt reduction. Although, some have used campaigns for these ends.
In Christendom, or the ministry side of the non-profit sector capital campaigns have undoubtedly been the most effective method used today for growth and expansion. The funds generated fuel everything from physical buildings and properties to missions and ministries of all kinds. With approximately 350,000 churches in America there seems no end to the opportunities for ministries to expand using capital campaigns. Add the number of Christian organizations that serve these churches and their people like Christian radio, tv, social media, worship music, etc., and more opportunities arise. Furthermore, the number of mission organizations continues to grow, and they need funding as well.
Almost all capital campaigns use a “pledge” system of some nature. Usually, a Faith Promise”, which we’ll discuss further in another blog. The “Faith Promise” method is a viable means so that everyone feels comfortable contributing and participating at their income level. Typically, the faith promise is over two to three years exponentially multiplying the gift. Furthermore, stretching the campaign over time allows the people to be able to consider their giving in a more defined manner.
A capital campaign has multiple benefits for the church or organization beyond just the funding. These moments foster unity of spirit, generates excitement, provides vision casting, and ultimately the “buy in” for what the ministry is seeking to accomplish for the Kingdom of Heaven. It’s an eternal investment in what God is doing through the local body.
It would seem, there is no end to the ‘capital campaign’ movement, if we can call it that, in the Unites States any time soon. Churches and organizations continue to sense the call of God for the furtherance of the Kingdom, and therefore, it will continue to need funding. New ministries are popping up daily and church planting continues on.
”The success rate of capital campaigns has hovered around 95% for all three years of the study (2023-2025). Organizations are raising an average of 116% of their campaign goals (up from 106% last year), with the highest reported achievement being 175% of the original goal”
More than three-quarters of organizations report that their annual funds either stayed the same or increased during their campaigns. Even more encouraging, 73% of organizations saw their annual funds increase in the years following their campaigns.”
Capital Campaign Pro 2026 Survey(CCP)
As reported by the CCP survey above, capital campaigns have a strong track record of success, especially those who use the professional consultant base. There are many excellent fund-raising professionals and consultants that really lend to the above success rate. The years of expertise and experience provide not only a level of confidence but workload effort as campaigns are very time-consuming. Most church and organizational staff simply don’t have the time to devote to such an effort. Therefore, the professional can provide everything from consultative expertise to “hands on” assistance.
Conclusion, capital campaigns have proven very successful and suggest that if you are considering expanding the ministry you reach out to one of the many qualified groups (including ours) that can help.
